Is Color Drenching Just a Trend or Timeless Style?

However you refer to it–color drenching, monographic–is painting a room from the top to bottom the same shade just a trend?

While it certainly is popular today, it seems seems to be an enduring “trend” if that’s how we want to refer to it. If you look at pictures of interior Victorian homes, you’ll see rooms painted with the same color tone on the walls, trim and other woodwork.

I sought out to test the design style in my office. The walls were already painted Oil Cloth by Benjamin Moore–a muted green that is a perfect middle balance of grey-green. I used an eggshell sheen. The sunlight will accentuate the green while the evening hours or unnatural light can make the space feel more grey.

The office started as a blank slate (or rather a dumping ground) for all miscellaneous things that hadn’t yet found their dedicated space in our home after we moved in. I had my office and hidden from Zoom camera view where various kid’s art supplies and toys.

Before color drenching. The office dumping ground.

First up, we worked with a local cabinet builder to install cabinets and shelfs on the back wall. I had these painted in the same color but in a semi-gloss sheet.

Next, I added wall molding myself on the side wall and used the same paint and sheen as the cabinets. To give some definition to the room, I added a peel & stick faux grasscloth wallpaper in a neutral color above the wall molding. I gave an outline of the process on my Instagram feed here.

Then I painted the remaining baseboards and crown molding in the room to match.

Lastly, I painted the office-side of the French doors, making sure to paint any side of the door that would face into the office while keeping the edges that faced out to the entryway white (Simply White by Benjamin Moore.)

Whether it is a trend or not, I have to say I love the look. The room feels less disjointed and larger overall keeping in the same color.

The only thing that I have not yet painted is the ceiling. If I’m being honest, I likely won’t do that any time soon. That’s not because I’m not a fan of leaning into the FULL color drenching, but rather just because I’m a messy painter. 🙂

What do you think? Is this something that you have tried or would considered in your own home?
