Asking for a friend–how many pillows is too many?
Following a recent purchase of the Crate and Barrel Gather bench seat sectional, my immediate next step was to select a variety of pillows that would match the Icon Stone chenille fabric, area rug and color tones of the open family room.
Here’s a breakdown of of my favorite accent pillows, including ones I recently purchased on Amazon. Many of these include different size and color options.

- Handmade Block Print Thick Linen in Rust Brown
- Washed Cotton Velvet Throw Pillow
- Velvet Rib Textured Throw Pillow
- Oversized Reversible Linen Square Throw Pillow with Frayed Edges
- Handmade Block Print Thick Linen in Grey
- Amor Virisso Floral Throw Pillow Cover in Dark Brown
- Woven Striped Throw Pillow Neutral/Dark Tan
- Amor Virisso Floral Pillow Covers in Dark Blue
When choosing accent pillows, first choose a color theme. A good rule of thumb is to keep to the color family of your couch and the area rug.
Work with a variety of sizes, fabric design and textures. Start with your largest pillows and work your way down. For sizes, select an oversized large square pillow, followed by 18X18, 16×16 and a lumbar pillow.
For fabrics, choose one of each: textured fabric, geometric design (you don’t have to go crazy–this can be a simple stripe), and then a floral pattern. Vintage floral patterns are very popular right now and you can find several options on Amazon that are not yet common in big brand stores. For a sectional, I get twice the pillows following the rules above but still making unique selections. This gives dimension to the space and avoids the look of a standard big furniture store display of matching pillows on each side.
