For those of you following, I’ve recently upgraded my dining room and living room with new furniture, window treatments and some other accents. There’s one legacy element from the 90s that was still lingering, however. Switch plates and outlet covers.
These have seen years of paint residue and look outdated compared to the modern, rectangular outlets and light switches that are included in new homes.
The easiest upgrade possible is to swap out the outlet and switch plates, leaving the existing receptacles and switches. I love the look of brass or gold covers. I made this update in my office and dining room as shown below using a collection of Henne Bery antique brass sunken peal switch plates and outlet covers. Each one takes less than a minute.

For the living and dining spaces, which spare a larger family area, I’m going one step further and upgrading the outlet receptacles too to make for a cleaner, uniform gold look. I broke down the process in a recent Instgram tutorial post.
Here’s a rundown of switch and outlet options that I found along my searches.

- ENERLITES Elite Series Decorator Receptacle Outlet
- LIDER Duplex Receptacle Metal Wall Plate, Stainless Steel Outlet Cover
- Amerelle Steps Single Toggle Cast Metal Wallplate in Rustic Brass
- Cover Star Soft Modern Decorative Wall Plate Switch Plate Outlet Cover
- Henne Bery Sunken Pearls Decorative Wall Plate Switch Plate Outlet Cover
- Henne Bery Sunken Pearls Decorative Wall Plate Switch Plate Outlet Cover
- LIDER Brushed Finish Decorator Switch Cover
- LIDER Matte Finish Decorator Receptacle with Interchangeable Face Cover
- Rio Salto BRASS Metal Gold Light Switch Wall Plate or Outlet Cover Wall Plate Decora Single Receptacle Wallplate
- ENERLITES Elite Series Decorator Light Switch with Brushed Screwless Wall Plate
I used the ENERLITES Elite Series Decorator Receptacle Outlet for the common spaces, which provided an updated square receptacle, plus a screwless face plate for a clean look. A pack of 10 came out to an incredible deal for less than $50, whereas one alone would be close to $20.
